I Can See Clearly Now

That was the name of a song written in 1972, a year before I graduated from high school in Carbondale, Illinois.  The words seem to describe what has been happening in my life the last three months since my surgery.  The most amazing thing, is that I truly CAN see more clearly now… my vision went from a -3.75 correction in each eye and my left eye is now 20/40 and requires no correction and the right eye is lagging behind slightly, needing the weakest soft contact that is available.  My glasses and contacts have been changed 4 times since April and now my doctor wants to hold off making any more changes until we see if i will need any correction at all within the next few weeks.

The optometrist is bewildered and neither of my other doctors have an explanation other than the fact that my health has improved a great deal now that I have lost another 40 pounds since April on top of the 85 I have lost over the last 4 years.  But my eyes are better than they were when I was 9 years old!  Who can explain what has really happened to my vision, but I love not having to wear glasses at home or when I am working.  I just need a bit of help when I am driving and you all want me to keep wearing that one little old contact just for that reason.

So let’s assume that the weight loss is the reason for the improved vision.  That’s a good incentive to lose weight, right?  For those of you struggling to lose weight, there is one very easy way to do it and it’s not hard at all.  For those of you that have been reading my blog, you know that I believe you should listen to your body and not your head when making food choices.  If you only eat what your body craves and don’t give into the Devil sitting on your shoulder next to that block head of yours, you’ll begin eating lots of lean meat, fish, all kinds of weird stuff like quinoa, tabouli, small amounts of fruit and tons of veggies, green smoothies and absolutely no sweets, breads, grains, and cereal.  Forget about that yucky dry whole wheat toast, and eat a small yummy croissant or a small piece of crispy hot french bread with some melting butter once a week or so.  It’s not the small treats with butter that undoes a diet, it’s eating the whole thing with jam and honey too!

I work out at the gym 3 times a week, swim 2 times a day and walk at least 2-3 miles a day….not on a treadmill, just walking as I live my life, never taking the elevator and walking from a far spot in the parking lot and staying busy all day and night long.  Dance while you are making breakfast, dinner, in the pool or even in the car.  Just wiggle while you work, and the pounds will melt away, I promise!!  Wear one of the new types of watches like Soleus which counts calories, steps and miles, how much time you exercise, in addition to letting you know when a message or call is coming in before your phone even catches on!  It even tells you when it is time to go to bed and whether you met all of your goals for the day.  It’s absolutely a must if you are trying to get your health under control.

I thought it might be fun to share the words to that 42 year old song that so perfectly describes my life.

I thank God every day for the “new” me and ask for courage and strength as I learn new things, try new adventures and meet new and loving people along the way.  With God’s help, there’s nothing but blue skies….it’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright, sunny day.
