Please and Thank You

As a business consultant for the past 25 years, I have always been an observer of human behavior in the workplace. This allows me to understand the relationships between the people that “do” versus those that “don’t”.  Why are some business owners so successful and yet others struggle?  The same holds true for married couples and other personal relationships; some couples are married over 50 years and just get better and better, while other people just walk away.  What’s the real difference?  Commitment.  It takes a lot of hard work and focus to run a business or any type of personal relationship.

There are basic things we must follow to be successful in our business and personal lives and the top one is pretty simple.  Don’t keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.  That’s Einstein’s definition for insanity and yet we drive ourselves crazy every day repeating the same actions in our jobs and relationships, getting frustrated, stressed, angry and going absolutely nowhere.

I attended a Life Training workshop at my church last night and heard a great story about a man who walked down the street to work, fell into a big hole, climbed out and then lamented about how stupid it was that the hole was there in the first place.  The next day, he went the same way to work, fell into the hole and complained about why the city hadn’t fixed the hole.   The third day, he fell in again and realized maybe this was partly his fault.  The following day, he walked down the street, saw the hole and went around it.  The fifth day, he just walked down a different street to work.   How great would it be to just move quickly to the fifth day and avoid all of that frustration in life?

To achieve success in anything we do, both professionally and personally, we must apply the following actions to our lives.
Do not be afraid to fail.  We learn by failing and it makes us smarter and tougher.
Set goals. Be S.M.A.R.T. — set goals that are smart, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Long-term goals are necessary for the big picture but setting short-term goals will achieve your vision more easily.
Jump in feet first. Don’t wait for the perfect time to start.  There may never be a “smart” time.  Like Nike has said for years, “just do it.”
Be accountable. Unless you track your results, you won’t be able to make adjustments along the way.
Take action.  If you are looking for answers and let obstacles block your way, you’ll be stopped before you even start.
Believe in yourself.  Confidence can overcome almost anything in life.  If you don’t believe in yourself, why should others?
Commit.  Do what it takes to get it done.  Go the extra mile.  Show the world what you believe in.
Keep your eyes open.  
The world we live in changes every minute so be ready for adjustments.
Persevere.  Do not ever give up.  Failure is not an option, just hold your head up high and keep moving.
Communicate effectively.  Don’t take the easy way of texting and emailing.  Pick up the phone and have a real conversation with the people who want you to succeed.
Show humility and gratitude.  An ego is critical for success as long as you always show appreciation for those who have helped you along the way.  Using the terms “please and thank you” are a lost art for many people who seem to have forgotten one of the first things we were taught as kids.

Life is simple.  Don’t over complicate it.  Ask God to help you in all parts of your life, not just one little compartment that seems to need a little work.  He is the best business partner or co-pilot you can ever ask for because He believes in you, so believe in yourself.  Show your appreciation for life along the way and don’t forget to say please and thank you.
